If you own a smartphone, chances are you have a lot of photographs you need to back up and save to free up space on your device. This is also true if you have a digital camera with a memory card and you like to snap pictures of family, friends and events. Regardless of the reason, if you have a library of images and videos to organize and save, there are a few excellent ways to do this.
Start by uploading the images to your computer. You can choose to save these pictures to folders on your hard drive or to upload the images to a cloud-based program like Google Photos.
To do this on a Mac computer, attach your phone or camera to your computer via a USB cable and select files and import.
Windows doesn't have a designated photo editor, but you can still upload the images into folders by dragging and dropping a single image or a folder directly onto your desktop. Also, be sure to put all of your pictures in one place instead of spreading them out over several applications.
Everyone has blurred images or pictures where they weren't in frame. Go through all your pictures and take out any bad shots that take up storage space. Remove duplicates. This is extremely helpful if you use a free storage application that only allows a certain number of photographs.
Create a labeling system that makes sense. This makes it easier to search for past images and to keep your collection under control. One good way to do this is to create main folders by year and month. For example, for the month of July in 2019, name the folder 2019 – 07. Under each separate main folder include the day and the event.
If you have a large library of photos, it can be daunting to locate something you need. Start using keywords and tags on every image before you store it in a file. In Mac Photos, click the picture and then the "I" icon. Add keywords to describe the picture.
In Google Photos, press Alt and Tag to add a keyword. To make it easier, you can also add a keyword to the file name to correctly identify the shot. For example, if you take pictures of the flowers at your birthday party, the file name would say "birthday party - flowers."
